Become a Mediator

All our mediators are trained to a high standard prior to joining our organisation. People who become mediators already possess the qualities necessary to be able to mediate - the training then provides them with the skills.

If these qualities apply to you, then you may be suitable to train as a mediator with our service;

  • a good listener
  • able to be directive, and to confront
  • comfortable with high emotion, arguments, interruptions, tears
  • able to remain confidential
  • able to empathise and to withhold judgement
  • impartial: not tempted to take sides
  • able to work with people of all ages, and from different backgrounds and cultures

We are looking for people with excellent communication skills, a high level of commitment and who are prepared to give time - around 10 hours per month.

Once trained, a new mediator is, initially, paired with a mentor and attends an induction session. They would be expected to make a commitment to the service of at least 18 months and undergo Criminal Records Bureau checks.

In order to train with our service, you must;

  • be resident in the borough of Reigate & Banstead, or the Tandridge District
  • have your own transport
  • have your own email address
  • be available to attend a training course of 6 days, over 3 weekends
  • be available to mediate Monday - Friday, day or evening
